Rains across 27 counties in Guangdong: Thousands evacuated

BEIJING, China – The heavy rains in China have not only forced tens of thousands of people to abandon their houses and evacuate but have also cost the country millions in damage. 

On Saturday, authorities in the country were forced to evacuate thousands of people from the Guangdong province as torrential rain lashed region causing major flooding.

Located in the southeastern coast of China, the Guangdong province surrounds Hong Kong.

Weather forecasters confirmed that the torrential rains in the country were not related to any particular typhoon or tropical storm. 

According to latest weather updates, Hong Kong has received about 210 millimeters or 8 inches of rain.

Local civil affairs authorities quoted in report in China’s Xinhua news agency said that two people were killed and two others were missing in the Guangdong Province.

Authorities further confirmed that the rains had forced the evacuation of 127,000 people so far.

Further, the Xinhua report noted that the rainfall has affected more than 1.2 million residents across 27 counties in eastern Guangdong, causing more than 1 billion yuan ($146 million) worth of damage, including to 44,700 hectares of farmland.
