NSW police seek help from public over serious Blue Mountains crash

KATOOMBA, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia – Police in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales are seeking witnesses to a major multi-vehicle collision that occurred on the Great Western Highway earlier this week.

Police say shortly after 5:00pm on Wednesday afternoon, a semi-trailer combination heading towards Sydney collided with the rear of a silver Mazda which then collided with the rear of a white utility. The Mazda then crossed the median strip into the Katoomba bound lanes and collided with the southern railway embankment.

The utility was forced by the impact into the rear of a red SUV.

Emergency services were called and attended soon after. The investigation is ongoing, with the truck driver claiming a mechanical defect caused the collision. As a result, a major defect notice was issued against the truck requiring it to be towed from the scene and to be subjected to a full mechanical examination prior to the defect notice being removed. Legal action is pending. The driver of the red SUV was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment to minor injuires.
