NSW Court of Appeal rejects Ron Medich Appeal in 2-1 decision

Mar 18, 2021

LITHGOW, Central West, NSW, Australia – One of Lithgow’s best-known residents will remain in the city for the next 27 years after a New South Wales Court of Appeal rejected his appeal Thursday.

Ron Medic, 72, arrived in Lithgow in 2018 after being sentenced to a non-parole term of 30 years in prison for the murder of his business associate Michael McGurk.

He has been an inmate at Lithgow Correctional Centre since then, and based on the result of the appeal handed down on Thursday morning, he will remain an inmate until 2048.

Medich, a property developer, who with his brother made hundreds of millions of dollars in buying up land near the site of the Badgery’s Creek Airport, was convicted of ordering McGurk’s killing, through his then business associate and confidant, former Australian boxer Lucky Gattelari.

Gatterlari gave evidence against his former boss after he refused to help him with legal; fees when he was arrested.

The appeal was based on errors, Medich’s legal team said occurred during the developer’s trial, and the reliability of Gattelari as a witness. However, the Court of Appeal had different views, although surprisingly the verdict was 2-1.
