Nov 10, 2020

CENTRAL WEST, NSW, Australia – A 24-year old man appeared in a Central West court on Monday after allegedly threatening a 76-year old taxi driver with a knife on the weekend.

The man is also charged with spitting on a police officer after his arrest.

The saga began around 12.40am on Saturday when the taxi driver picked up two men, aged 24 and 30, from Lords Place, Orange.

As the taxi travelled along Summer Street, the 24-year-old allegedly threatened the driver with a knife and demanded he unlock his mobile phone.

The driver, aged 76, managed to escape the vehicle on Anson and Prince streets, Orange and ran to a nearby taxi for help.

He was chased by the 24-year-old for a short distance, before both passengers decided to flee the scene.

Officers attached to Central West Police District responded in short time and arrested both men nearby.

The pair were taken to Orange Police Station, where it is alleged the younger man spat on a constable after entering custody.

It is alleged the man was found with two knives and a pair of scissors in his possession.

He was charged with robbery whilst armed with offensive weapon, assault police and breach of bail.

The 24-year old was refused bail and appeared at Dubbo Local Court on Sunday, where he was formally refused bail ahead of his appearance at Orange Local Court on Monday.

The 30-year-old man has been released pending further enquiries.

NSW Police say investigations are continuing.
