Historic ommemorative service at Glenroy Cairn in Hartley

Sep 27, 2017

The Glenroy Cairn at Hartley has now been fully restored and an open garden event was held on Saturday to mark the installation of a replica marble plaque, which replaced the original plaque that was installed in 1936.

The cairn was first used for a divine commemoration service after the Blue Mountains were first crossed. Governor Macquarie came to the region and stayed at Glenroy.

“The Glenroy Cairn is an important monument to the Hartley district. It’s important that Council continues to protect our historic sites,” Lithgow City Council Mayor Stephen Lesslie said.

Under recommendations of the Royal Australian Historical Society, the cairn underwent initial conservation work in 2015. The second stage of work, which was carried out by Rookwood Cemetery, required the replacement of the heavily damaged plaque, with a new marble plaque to match the historic original.
