Following hoax bomb threats several US statehouses evacuated

Jan 8, 2024

WASHINGTON D.C.: The FBI and state officials said a series of hoax bomb threats on the morning of January 3 forced several statehouses across the country to briefly evacuate.

Threats were made to the state capitols in Connecticut, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, and Montana.

However, police who swept the buildings the same day in the afternoon found no explosives or suspicious equipment.

In a statement, the FBI said that even though there was no indication of a “credible threat,” it “takes hoax threats very seriously because it puts innocent people at risk.”

Following the sweep, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said the “threat has now been cleared.”

Montana’s Department of Administration General Services said “the threat was found to not be credible.”

The Middletown Press reported that Connecticut’s statehouse was briefly closed before reopening after police determined the threat to be a hoax.

Michigan State Police said that after an emailed bomb threat was received at about 7:45 a.m., the statehouse in Lansing would remain closed for the rest of the day out of “an abundance of caution.”
