First tenders called for construction of new Western Sydney airport

Aug 21, 2017

Airport will be completed in 2026, total cost estimated at $5.3 billion

SPRINGWOOD, Blue Mountains NSW – The first tenders for the construction of the Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek have been called. The move follows last week’s establishment of WSA Co Limited, which will take charge of the $5.3 billion development.

The first tenders called are for project management and technical services. Expressions of interest will close on September the 1st.

Blue Mountains mayor Mark Greenhill on Tuesday took a swipe at the new corporation, saying he hopes it knows more than the community, which he says is left with uncertainty at every turn.

The mayor described the Environment Impact Study on the airport project as a ‘con job,’ repeating his previous demand for a new EIS.

Stage one of the project involves earthworks to move and redistribute 22 million cubic metres of soil, development of a 3.7-kilometre runway, aprons, and taxiways; construction of a 90,000 square metres terminal, and the construction of a carpark for 11,500 cars.

The airport is expected to be fully completed by 2026 and when finished, according to the Federal Government, it will employ up to 20,000 people directly and indirectly.
