Fire at Winmalee High School deliberately lit

A fire which broke out at the Winmalee High School in the Blue Mountains on Saturday morning is being treated as suspicious.

Fire Rescue & RFS were called to the school on High School Drive, Winmalee, just north of Springwood, around 7:45am Saturday after reports of a fire in a store room on the first floor of the music building.

Due to their efforts, the fire was contained to the storeroom however it left significant water and smoke damage to that section of the building.

Officers from the Blue Mountains Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene.

Early indications suggest intruders lit the fire before leaving, stealing numerous musical instruments in the process.

Some of these instruments were recovered by police nearby.

Investigations are ongoing and anyone with information that may assist is urged to come forward.

Winmalee High School was established in 1985, and has 900 students enrolled from year 7 to year 12 and has 62 teachers on staff. The school is famous for its Autumn Art Festival, which gets behind well-known local artists from throughout the region.
