Ferro defeats Kontaveit for Palermo title

Aug 10, 2020

France’s Fiona Ferro captured her second career WTA title Sunday with a 6-2, 7-5 win against No. 4 seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia at the Palermo Ladies Open in Italy.

Ferro converted five of seven break points and tallied three aces and just two double faults in the one-hour, 43-minute match.

Ferro, 23, lost only one set in five matches this week to claim her first title since July 2019 at the Swiss Open, also played on clay.

Kontaveit, who reached the quarterfinals at the 2020 Australian Open, jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the second set before losing back-to-back service games.

Serving for the match at 6-5, Ferro converted her second match point to end the WTA’s first official event since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the season in early March.

Ferro, who will move into the Top 50 for the first time in her career, accepted the trophy while wearing a mask and gloves for protection.
