ABU DHABI, UAE – UAE footballer Sultan Saif Sultan and his wife and youngest son were killed when his car collided with a truck in Abu Dhabi on Thursday afternoon.

Sultan, 27, the namesake and son of former UAE National Football Team star Saif Sultan, began his football career with Al Wahda football academy as a striker, and played for the Bani Yas and Ittihad Kalba clubs.

When playing for Al Falah, a second division league, he was the top scorer in the competition. He led his team to finish second on the ladder in the first edition which qualified him for the first division league with Katrua, but the lack of competitions due to the coronavirus pandemic prevented any team from the second division graduating to the first division this season.

Sultan and his son were reportedly killed in the crash, while the footballer’s wife was critically injured. She died later in hospital.

“Our condolences to the Emirati football star Saif Sultan on the death of his son, Sultan,” Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid, President of the United Arab Emirates Football Association posted on Twitter.
