Boy shot in back near Bathurst remains in critical condition

A young boy remains in the intensive care unit at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead after being shot in the back on a hunting trip near Bathurst on Sunday.

The boy, 15, was with another boy, 16, on a property at Sofala, just north of Bathurst, about 9:30 on Sunday morning. The pair was travelling in a utility. The boy was in the back. 

Police understand a 12-gauge shotgun lying in the back of the ute accidently misfired when the ute rolled back and jolted. 

The boy’s companion drove him towards an ambulance which was travelling to the scene after being summoned when the shooting occurred.

Paramedics accompanying the ambulance then took over and took the critically injured boy to a specialist paramedic unit 10 kilometres away. The teenagter was then taken to Bathurst Airport, where he had a blood transfusion and was placed in an induced coma.

The boy was then boarded on a NSW Ambulance helicopter and flown  to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, 200 kilometres away.

The Orana-Mid Western Police District is investigating the shooting.
