Azarenka suffers ankle injury but sill going to Montreal

Aug 7, 2021

Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka withdrew from an exhibition event in Washington on Friday with an ankle injury but still plans to play next week in Montreal.

The 32-year-old from Belarus, last year’s US Open runner-up, was to have faced American Jessica Pegula on Friday at the Citi Open.

“I rolled my ankle and I need to rest before I start in Montreal,” said world number 15 Azarenka.

Azarenka upset Serena Williams in last year’s US Open semi-finals to reach her first Grand Slam final since the 2013 US Open. She lost to Japan’s Naomi Osaka in the championship match.

Azarenka has won 21 career titles, most recently last August in a US Open tune-up event moved to New York due to Covid-19. She won by walkover when Osaka withdrew from the final with a hamstring injury.

That event, which returns to Cincinnati in two weeks, marked her first title since 2016 at Miami and her first crown since giving birth to son Leo in 2016.
