Another bus carrying asylum seekers from Texas arrives in LA

Jul 6, 2023

LOS ANGELES, California: For the second time in two weeks, a bus carrying migrants from the Texas border has arrived in downtown Los Angeles.

In a statement, spokesperson for Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, said the office of Mayor Bass was not notified, but became aware within hours of the bus dispatched from Brownsville, Texas, to LA Union Station.

“The City of Los Angeles believes in treating everyone with respect and dignity and will do so,” spokesman Zach Seidl said.

The bus carried 41 asylum-seekers from Cuba, Belize, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua and Venezuela, and were welcomed by representatives of various faith and immigrant rights groups.

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights said 11 children were on the bus.

The St. Anthony’s Croatian Parish Center and church provided water, food, clothing and initial legal immigration assistance to the migrants.

Los Angeles was not the final destination for six people, who needed to fly to Las Vegas, Seattle, San Francisco and Oakland, he added.

On 14th June, a bus carrying 42 migrants from Texas, with many coming from Latin American countries, including Honduras and Venezuela, arrived in LA, but they were not provided with water or food.

The bus was sent to Los Angeles because California has declared itself a “sanctuary” for immigrants, extending protections to people living in the country illegally, said Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Earlier in June, Florida sent three dozen migrants who were caught in Texas by private jet to Sacramento, surprising local shelters and aid workers.
