Admiral Lisa Franchetti nominated by Biden as first female Navy chief

Jul 25, 2023

WASHINGTON D.C.: In an historic step, last week President Joe Biden nominated Admiral Lisa Franchetti to lead the US Navy.

Franchetti is expected to be confirmed as the first woman to command the Navy and become a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Admiral Samuel Paparo, who leads the Navy in the Pacific, was widely expected to be nominated by Pentagon officials.

However, Franchetti, who is currently the vice chief of operations for the Navy, is widely respected and has been commander of US Naval Forces Korea.

In a statement, Biden noted Franchetti’s 38 years of experience.

“Throughout her career, Admiral Franchetti has demonstrated extensive expertise in both the operational and policy arenas,” Biden said.

Biden’s announcement comes during a block on all US military nominations in Congress by Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is protesting a Defense Department policy to reimburse costs for service members who travel for abortions.

The US Senate approves all senior military nominations.

Air Force General Charles “C.Q.” Brown, Biden’s pick to become head of the Army, said Tuberville’s freeze could have far-reaching effects on the armed forces and affect troops and their families, therefore, costing the US military its much-needed talent.

Biden earlier said that the delays undermined the nation’s security.
