Historical photos of Lithgow in the 19th & 20th century to go online

Dec 19, 2017

LITHGOW, Central West, NSW, Australia – The recently completed first phase of the photo digitisation project will be launched next month.

Up to 600 photos from an extensive local historical photograph collection held by the Lithgow Library have been the basis for the project.

At the recent opening of the new rotunda at Portland, Mayor Stephen Lesslie called on locals to add to the collection by scouring their homes and workplaces for old photographs.

“Should anyone find old photographs of historical interest such as street parades or old buildings that have since been demolished then please let the Lithgow Library know so that they can be preserved,” the Lithgow mayor said.

Historians and researchers, or anyone with an interest in Lithgow, can gain a glimpse of what life was like in Lithgow’s early 19th and 20th century history through the historical photographs.

The selection of almost 600 photographs from the extensive Lithgow Library and Lithgow District Historical Society collections has been digitised and uploaded to the Library catalogue record which makes access to the photographs possible outside of Library hours.

The launch will be held on Wednesday 24 January 2018 starting at 11:00am and will include talks on the history of photography in Lithgow.
