BEIJING, China – The Chinese foreign minister has warned against punlishing Venezuela as it confronts a deepening political and economic crisis and increasing isolation.

Foreign Mnister Wang Yi outlined the importance of not interfering in Venezuela’s domestic affairs.

The call comes after increasing pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, backed by dozens of westrern countries, for present Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to be removed, and replaced by Juan Guaido, thne President of the National Assembly, as president.

“It is up to the people of a country to decide its internal affairs,” Wang said Friday. “External interference and sanctions will only aggravate tensions and bring the law of the jungle.”

“There have been plenty of such lessons in history and they should not be repeated,” he said.

“In China’s view, the sovereignty and independence of every country is precious and must be cherished and preserved in equal measure.”

Elliott Abrams, the U.S. envoy to Venezuela, told a U.S. Senate subcommittee on Thursday that Washington is planning new, extra sanctions on financial institutions that support the Maduro government, together with executives of those sinstitutions.

Venezuela is suffering from economic meltdown and is now being confronted by hyperinflation.

China is one country that has retained ties with Maduro.

“China will continue to support the search for a political solution in Venezuela through dialogue with the government and the opposition, so as to keep the country stable and the people safe,” Wang said.
