“Golan is Syrian land,” says Arab League secretary-general

TUNIS, Tunisia – In a major speech during the ministerial session in advance of the Arab League Summit due to convene on Sunday in Tunisia, the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ibrahim al-Assaf has rejected U.S. recognition of Israel’s ownership of the Golan Heights.

“We support the territorial integrity of Syria and the political solution based on dialogue between the opposition and the regime,” he added

The Saudi minister added that his country wants to unify the Syrian opposition ahead of talks with the Syrian regime.”

During the preparatory ministerial session, the Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the situations in Syria, Yemen and Yemen require a political solution.

“Golan is Syrian land,” he said in response to U.S. President Trump’s recent siding with Israel over the disputed lands’ sovereignty.

The Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs Khemaies Jhinaoui added, “the Trump decision on the occupied Golan is null and void and has no legal effect.”

“We will work with other Arab countries to contain the impact of U.S. decision to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights,” he said,

Government ministers from the 22 Arab League countries have been holding preparatory meetings in Tunis all in advance Sunday’s summit.
