Canadian tourists in United Kingdom told to beware

Mar 30, 2019

OTTAWA, Canada – Canadians travelling or living in the UK are being told by their government to be highly cautious.

Canada issued a travel warning on Friday for Canadians in the UK to “exercise a high degree of caution” because of widespread and growing protests over the machinations of the Brexit process.

“Acts of violence could occur as well as confrontations between demonstrators and security forces,” Global Affairs Canada said posted on Twitter. “Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and nearby underground stations.”

Global Affairs also made note the UK is currently on an upgraded threat level in relation to terrorism.

Exercising a high degree of caution

“There are identifiable safety and security concerns or the safety and security situation could change with little notice,” the definition of exercising a high degree of caution says on the Canada advisory website. “You should exercise a high degree of caution at all times, monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities.”

The upgraded warning came after British lawmakers on Friday rejected for a third time a deal that would allow an orderly departure from the European Union. Right now the UK is facing a no’deal Brexit.

“Demonstrations are expected to take place in London on March 29, 2019,” Global Affairs said in a tweet. “Demonstrators will march in the Parliament’s vicinity, near the main government buildings on Whitehall and near Westminister Abbey.”
