Apr 2, 2019

LIMA, Peru – A tragic bus fire has taken the lives of at least twenty people, and left 7 others severely burned.

The tragedy occurred in Lima, the capital of Peru on Sunday.

According to Peruvian news agency El Periodico, a bus travelling between provinces at a bus stop in the San Martin de Porres district, north of the capital, caught fire and became engulfed in flames.

By the time emergency services arrived at the scene the bus had been virtually destroyed by the fire.

Those injured in the bus inferno were taken to the hospital Cayetano Heredia in Lima, fire department spokesman Lewis Mejia said Sunday.

Firefighters say the cause of the fire is under investigation, but it appears a spark triggered the blaze.

The bus’s destination was the northern city of Chiclayo.
