Mar 1, 2021

David Goffin came from a set down Sunday to beat No. 1 seed Roberto Bautista Agut 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier, winning his first ATP Tour title since 2017.

Goffin, the No. 2 seed, won his fifth career tournament by posting 13 aces and breaking the Spaniard’s serve four times in seven chances in the match, which lasted two hours, five minutes.

The 30-year-old Belgian won his fourth straight match against Bautista Agut and moved to 4-2 in his career against him. He became only the third non-French player to win the singles title in Montpellier, and the first since German Alexander Zverev did it in 2017.

Bautista Agut, 32, didn’t drop a set this week and was attempting to win his 10th tour-level title. He fell to 9-8 in championship matches.

Unseeded Australian Alexei Popyrin dropped the first set but rallied to defeat Alexander Bublik 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 and win his first ATP Tour title.

The 21-year-old Popyrin needed just 84 minutes to defeat Kazakhstan’s Bublik, who was seeded fourth. Popyrin won all but six points on his serve (46 of 52), struck 11 aces and converted five of his 10 break opportunities.

Entering this tournament, Popyrin never had played past the quarterfinals of an ATP Tour event. On Saturday, he beat third seed Marin Cilic to move into the finals.
