PENRITH, Sydney, NSW, Australia – A woman pulled over on the Great Western Highway Monday afternoon, tested positive for an illicit drug, and was found to have a 5-year old in the back seat of her car, without a seatbelt or booster seat.
The incident took place at Warrington, in Penrith around 12:45pm on Monday afternoon.
Police attached to Strike Force Puma stopped the woman’s Holden Captiva for a random breath test on the Great Western Highway.
As police approached the vehicle they said they noticed a five-year-old boy in the back seat of the car.
It is alleged the child was unrestrained (didn’t have a seatbelt on and wasn’t in a booster seat).
The driver, a 26-year-old Emerton woman, returned a negative reading to the roadside breath test. A roadside drug test was also administered.
The woman tested positive for the presence of an illicit drug in her system and was prohibited from driving for 24 hours.
A further sample was sent for laboratory analysis to determine if legal action will be taken.
The boy was left in the care of a close family friend and a Child At Risk Notification has been made to the Department of Family and Community Services.
The fine for Drive with Passengers 4 years or older but less than 7 years old (Not restrained as prescribed) is $337 and 3 demerit points.
