White House press secretary calls charges against Cuomo “serious”

Mar 4, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC – Following accusations of sexual harassment against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Sunday that President Joe Biden supports an “independent review” of the claims.

On Wednesday, Lindsey Boylan, a candidate for Manhattan borough president who formerly worked for Cuomo, said the governor had kissed her without her consent and asked her to play strip poker.

By Saturday, Charlotte Bennett, a former executive assistant and health policy adviser to Cuomo, made a second claim of harassment against the governor.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Psaki said, “Charlotte should be treated with respect and dignity. So should Lindsey. And there should be an independent review looking into these allegations. And that’s certainly something [Biden] supports and we believe should move forward as quickly as possible.”

Psaki characterized the accusations by Boylan and Bennett as “serious.”

Cuomo has denied Boylan’s claims, and said he “never made advances” towards Bennett or behaved “in any way that was inappropriate.”

Cuomo has also requested an independent review of the allegations.

The sexual harassment accusations could not come at a worse time for Cuomo, who is under scrutiny for allegedly under-counting nursing home coronavirus deaths in New York.
