Two fatalities on Central West roads in 24 hours

Two people have died on Central West roads in less than twenty four hours. Another 7 have died across the state.

There was a fatal crash on the Mitchell Highway at Wellington just before 9.30am on Thursday. The other Central West fatality came on Wednesday, around 11:00am when a man was struck by the XPT train two kilometres from Bathurst.

Emergency services were called to the Mitchell Highway at Wellington, after reports a Toyota Camry sedan and a Toyota Landcruiser towing a caravan had collided on Thursday morning.

The driver and sole occupant of the Camry, a 73-year-old man – was released after being trapped. He was treated and despite efforts to revive him, died at the scene.

The male driver of the Landcruiser, and his two passengers, were uninjured and treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance officers.

In other incidents from around the state:

A trail bike rider was killed and a second rider charged with assault following a two-vehicle crash in the state’s south on Thursday night.

About 8.30pm Thursday 19 July 2018), emergency services were called to Lowe Street at Howlong, about 30km west of Albury, following reports a Nissan Navara utility and a trail bike had collided.

The trail bike rider, a 23-year-old man, died at the scene.

A second trail bike rider was not injured and allegedly assaulted the driver of the utility, a 65-year-old man, before stealing his vehicle.

Police will allege, the rider returned in the utility before further assaulting the driver and fleeing on foot.

Following inquiries, officers arrested a 28-year-old man at a nearby home.

About 8.05am Wednesday 18 July 2018, a 74-year-old man died after his Jaguar sedan left the roadway whilst travelling south on the Hume Highway at Pheasants Nest.

About 11am Wednesday a thirty-year-old man died after his Mitsubishi Lancer collided with a Range Rover Evoque on Wilfred Barrett Drive at Norah Head, on the Central Coast.

An 89-year-old woman died in hospital Wednesday after her Toyota Yaris reversed from the driveway of a home on Terrace Place at Sylvania and hit a neighbouring fence on Tuesday.

Just before 11.30pm Wednesday three people died after two cars collided on the Monaro Highway at Michelago, 40km south of Queanbeyan.

Police meantime are continuing their investigation into the death of the man struck by the XPT near Bathurst on Wednesday.

Police and paramedics were quickly on the scene, however there was little they could do. The man had been killed instantly.

Investigators have interviewed witnesses, mostly drivers and occupants of cars that had been waiting at the crossing for the high speed train to pass.

Lloyds Road was closed for a period on Wednesday following the collision. The XPT was also held up, and remained stationery at the crossing, while police carried out their investigation.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

The XPT (express passenger train), in service since 1982, has an aerodynamic design and travels between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Dubbo, Grafton and Casino.
