Police pursuit in Blue Mountains called off after crash

KATOOMBA, Blue Mountains – A 29-year old man is facing serious charges after leading police on a chase through the Blue Mountains where he reached speeds of up to 150 kilometres an hour.

The pursuit had to be terminated after a 3-way collision involving the vehicle which had been stolen. The man continued to speed on, while police called off the chase because it was becoming too dangerous to continue.

The man was eventually arrested after a dragnet, and was charged at Katoomba Police station, where he was refused bail ahead of a court appearance in the Penrith Local Court on Friday.

The drama began about 3 o’clock Thursday afternoon when officers attached to the Blue Mountains Highway Patrol sighted a stolen grey Mazda SUV travelling west on the Great Western Highway at Faulconbridge.

The vehicle was travelling at over 100 kilometres an hour in a 40 kilometres an hour zone.

The officers lost sight of the vehicle, however other Highway Patrol officers came across it at Linden and began to give chase.

The driver of the Mazda SUV reached speeds of up to 150 kilometres an hour before becoming involved in a minor collision with two other vehicles. It was at this point the pursuit was terminated, and a perimeter was established near Wentworth Falls.

The vehicle was eventually located in Sir Henry Burrell Drive at Wentworth Falls by the police helicopter PolAir.

The 29-year-old man was arrested after a short struggle, and was taken to Katoomba Hospital for treatment and mandatory testing before being transported to Katoomba Police Station and being formally charged with a range iof offences inlcuding resisting arrest, using a weapon to avoid apprehension, speeding, assaulting and intimidating police.
