Phone reception in Blue Mountains to improve, at least in Winmalee

Sep 29, 2017

Mobile phone reception across the Blue Mountains remains a major concern, however steps have been taken this week to improve services in Winmalee. The Blue Mountains City Council has agreed to a co-lease which will allow Optus to locate its antennas on the existing Telstra Tower in Summerhayes Park. Telstra installed a telecommunications tower in the park in March. The tower’s design allows for other carriers to be added. This will relieve Optus of having to build a new tower.

Councillor Shae Foenander, said, “For a long time this area had suffered from poor mobile phone coverage. Bush fire sensitive areas such as this need to have the best telecommunication options available to it.

Councillor Mick Fell said, “This will go a long way towards addressing the patchy mobile reception and potential safety risks experienced in the Winmalee area for many years.

“This fills a long standing gap”, said Councillor Daniel Myles. “I hope that other areas with poor reception across the Mountains are similarly addressed.”
