Nature Conservation Council slams state government over decision to save Springvale mine

Oct 13, 2017

While members of the state government and opposition are in full support of the legislation to ensure the continuity of the Springvale coal mine, the Nature Conservation Council is not.

The environmental group is calling on crossbenchers in the New South Wales Legislative Council to reject the amendments to the EPA Act which the government passed in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday night.

“The government and Centennial Coal have fabricated a crisis that they are now exploiting to weaken environmental protections to benefit many of the state’s other big polluters,” NCC CEO Kate Smolski (pictured) said yesterday.

“This is completely outrageous. The changes the government is ramming through parliament will not just apply to Centennial’s Springvale coal mine, which is at the centre of this scandal,” she added.
