Man in Central West tasered after attack on police

Jul 16, 2018

A 58-year old man had to be tasered after he tried to run down a police officer, in the Central West on Saturday.

The drama began around 4:15pm Saturday afternoon when police spoke with the man, who was standing outside Orange Police Station (pictured).

It’s alleged the man then got into a vehicle and threatened a male sergeant before deliberately driving his vehicle towards him, forcing him to jump out of the way.

The officer wasn’t injured; however, the man allegedly repeatedly attempted to strike him with the car.

Other police came to the sergeant’s assistance and brought the vehicle to a stop at the intersection of Byng and Anson streets.

Several police vehicles were damaged and the man was subdued with a taser.

The 58-year-old was arrested and was taken to Orange Police Station where he was subsequently charged with assaulting and intimidating police; driving in a dangerous manner, resisting arrest and using an instrument to avoid arrest.

The man, who is from Orange, was refused bail and was scheduled to appear at the Orange Bail Court on Sunday.

A senior constable received minor injuries while attempting to stop the vehicle; however, she did not require medical treatment.

Police have spoken to several witnesses, but are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone with footage of the incident, to contact Orange Police or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
