Live COVID-19 updates: Mongolia reports 2nd death from COVID-19

BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) — The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

ULAN BATOR — A second death related to COVID-19 was reported in Mongolia, the country’s National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD) said Tuesday.

“A 76-year-old Mongolian man, who was diagnosed with COVID-19 and suffered chronic heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia and chronic arterial occlusive disease of the lower extremities, died on Monday at the NCCD,” Amarjargal Ambaselmaa, head of the surveillance department of the center, said at a daily press conference.

NEW DELHI — India’s COVID-19 tally rose to 10,356,844 on Tuesday as 16,375 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the federal health ministry.

According to the data, the death toll mounted to 149,850 as 201 COVID-19 patients died since Monday morning.

SHIJIAZHUANG — China’s Hebei Province reported 14 locally-transmitted COVID-19 cases and 30 asymptomatic cases on Monday, the provincial health commission said Tuesday.

Among the confirmed cases, 11 were reported in the provincial capital of Shijiazhuang. All of the 30 asymptomatic cases were also reported in the city. The commission has classified Xiaoguozhuang Village in Gaocheng District of the city as a high-risk area for COVID-19.

BERLIN — A total of 265,986 people have received COVID-19 vaccine in Germany as of Monday, the Robert Koch Institute said.

Among those vaccinated were more than 114,600 residents of nursing homes and around 123,100 medical staff, according to data collected from federal states. The country’s COVID-19 vaccination program started on Dec. 27.

SYDNEY — The Australian city of Sydney reported four new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, with concerns over potential spread to rural centres.

Health officials confirmed that the four new cases were linked to an existing cluster involving a liquor store in the western Sydney suburb of Berala, which reached 15 cases total.

MEXICO CITY — Cases of a new and more infectious coronavirus variant that was first identified in Britain have been detected in Latin America.

South American countries including Brazil and Chile have both reported two cases of the COVID-19 variant.

Brazil’s southeast Sao Paulo state on Monday confirmed two cases were detected in the state capital, also known as Sao Paulo, involving a 25-year-old and a 34-year-old who were in contact with people who traveled to Britain.

SEOUL — South Korea reported 715 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Tuesday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 64,979.

The daily caseload fell below 1,000 after recording 1,020 in the previous day, but it hovered above 100 for 59 days since Nov. 8 due to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province as well as imported cases.
