Italy’s Fabio Fognini is having surgery on both ankles Saturday.
The world’s 11th-ranked player said on Twitter that the sport’s coronavirus-related hiatus made it the right time to have the operations.
“After medical examination and a long discussion with my team, I decided to have arthroscopy surgery on both ankles,” Fognini wrote Saturday. “I believe it’s the right thing to do while the Tour is on this enforced break. I will undergo surgery in Italy today. I can’t wait to be back playing again! I know you will support me. A big hug to all of you!”
Fognini, 33, has won nine singles titles on the ATP Tour, including the 2019 Monte Carlo Masters. He won a Grand Slam doubles title at the 2015 Australian Open, paired with countryman Simone Bolelli.
