Head-on collision that killed woman under investigation

An investigation is underway into the fatal head-on collision at Ilford on Thursday in the state’s Central West.

Ilford is 71 kilometres north of Lithgow, and 73 kilometres north of Bathurst.

Emergency services were called to Ilford Sofala Road at Ilford, after reports two cars had crashed head on.

A young woman, aged in her 20s, who was driving a Suzuki, died at the scene.

The male driver and female passenger of a Holden Ute were both airlifted to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition.

Officers from Orana-Mid Western Police District attended and with the assistance of the Crash Investigation Unit, are investigating the circumstances of the crash, which occurred just before 4pm on Thursday.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Thursday’s fatality is the second to have occurred on the Ilford Sofala road in the past 3 years. The previous fatal crash occurred in Septemnber 2015.

The Ilford Sofala Road was the subject of a major upgrade earlier this year. The works were carried out to improve safety conditions on the road which has seen an unprecedented number of vehicle crashes in recent years.
