Fiery semi-trailer crash at Katoomba closes GW highway

A semi-trailer collided with a car and caught alight in Katoomba just before midnight on Saturday night.
The Great Western Highway was closed for several hours from the time of the crash until well into the early hours of Sunday morning.
The collision occurred at the intersection of the Great Western Highway and Explorers Road around 11:30pm Saturday night.
The driver of the semi-trailer, a man aged in his 40s, was uninjured.
The male driver of the car, remained trapped in the vehicle for one-and-a-half hours and was treated by paramedics.
Officers from the Blue Mountains Police Area Command worked with Fire & Rescue NSW to free the trapped driver, after which he was taken to Westmead Hospital in critical condition.
