May 9, 2019

FORBES, Central West, NSW, Australia – There has been yet another fatality on Central West roads.

On Wednesday afternoon a single-veicle crash in Forbes has left one man dead, and another in critical condition.

The crash occurred around 2:20pm on Wednesday. The vehicle carrying the men, a Holden utility, was travelling along Bedgerabong Road, Forbes, when the ute left the road and struck a tree.

The passenger, a 20-year-old man, died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

The driver, a 24-year-old man, was taken to Orange Base Hospital, before being transferred to Westmead Hospital in critical condition.

Officers from the Central West Police District attended and established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist officers from the Central West and Metropolitan Crash Investigation Units.

The crash has occurred on the second day of the United Nations Global Road Safety Week.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1.25 million people die every year on the world's roads. Close to half of those deaths are caused by drivers exceeding the speed limit.

"Speed is at the core of the global road traffic injury problem," WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan said in a news release issued on the eve of the week, which runs from 8 to 14 May. "If countries were to address just this key risk, they would soon reap the rewards of safer roads, both in terms of lives saved and increases in walking and cycling, with profound and lasting effects on health."
