MELBOURNE, Victoria, Australia – 2LT morning radio host, Ray Hadley, whose morning radio show is broadcast on a network of stations across Australia, has become the most celebrated radio announcer in the history of the Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs).

On Saturday night he was awarded the Best Talk Presenter of the year, Best Sports Event Coverage, Best On-Air Team (Metro AM), as part of the Continuous Call Team and an induction into the Hall of Fame, taking his total awards to 30 throughout his 36-year radio career.

Hadley’s success comes just days after a controversy in the Central West. On Tuesday Hadley blasted Orange station 2MMM over their reaction to comments he made the previous week. 2MMM responded by taking the broadcaster off the air. A war of words ensured however the Orange station ultimately relented and resumed taking his broadcast.

For the second year running, Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwell and Marty Sheargold, hosts of NOVA’s number one national drive show, won the Best On-Air Team (Metro FM).

Kate, Tim and Marty have been on air since January 2014 and have consistently been the number one national FM drive team.

In front of more than 1,000 industry peers, Ray Hadley and Amanda Keller were recognised for their outstanding lifetime achievement and contribution to the radio broadcasting industry by being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The Ray Hadley Morning Show has rated number one in Sydney since 2003, and is heard on 2GB in Sydney, 4BC in Brisbane, and 30 network stations, including 2LT, across Australia. In 2016 Ray celebrated 100 consecutive survey wins on his morning program. The former auctioneer and taxi driver, turned top-rating broadcaster, has had success across sport, news, talk and current affairs, which has not only earned him more ACRAs than any other presenter but also an incredibly loyal cross-generation audience.

Ray started as a traffic reporter on 2UE for the late legendary Sydney broadcaster, Gary O’Callaghan. By 1982 he was covering Rugby League and calling races. He was with 2UE for 19 years, and became a stand-in for John Laws when he would be on leave. He moved to 2GB to do breakfast radio in 2001. In 2002, The Ray Hadley Morning Program began each weekday continuing the unprecedented success of his ‘Continuous Call Team’ on the weekends. Ray’s Continuous Call Team has remained unbeaten in the ratings since 1992 and was this year awarded the Best On Air Team AM award.

Ray has covered 75 State of Origins, 27 Rugby League Grand Finals, 6 Olympic Games (1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012) and three Rugby World Cups (1991, 2003 and 2011 and led the ever-popular Continuous Call Team on air for 31 years. He was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2003 for service to rugby league as a broadcaster and for his community fundraising for charitable organisations.

Amanda Keller, co-host of WSFM’s breakfast show, Jonesy and Amanda is the first female on-air presenter to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and last year was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her three-decade career in the entertainment industry.

Amanda’s journalistic career began on Simon Townsend’s Wonder World in 1985. She then became a regular on-air reporter on Ray Martin’s Midday Show but it was six years on Beyond 2000 that made her a household name.

Amanda reported from all over the world and received a number of journalism awards including a United Nations Media Peace Award (1989) and the Michael Daley Award for Science Journalism (1989).

In 1995, Amanda started her radio career with a highly successful five-year breakfast show on Triple M with friend, comedian and television producer, Andrew Denton. She was lured back to breakfast radio in 2005, where she continues to enjoy success with co-host Jonesy at WSFM both recently signing a contract through to 2020.

Walkley award winner, Andrew Denton who recently underwent major heart surgery, made a surprise appearance on the night to present Amanda with her Hall of Fame award.

The Hall of Fame recipients are nominated byindustry peers and are selected by an executive level judging committee. Last year’s inductee was Nova Entertainment chief executive officer, Cathy O’Connor, previous inductees have included: Jeremy Cordeaux, Peter Harvie, Kevin Blyton, Graham Mott, Tony Pilkington, Derryn Hinch, Neil Mitchell, John Laws, Bob Rogers, Janet Cameron, Gary O’Callaghan, Paul Thompson, Bob Francis, Rod Muir and the late Frank Hyde.

One of Australia’s most respected journalists, 3AW’s Neil Mitchell won the prestigious and hard-fought Brian White Award for Radio Journalism, bringing his career ACRA total to 20. Best Current Affairs presenter was won this year by 2GB’s Ben Fordham, a three-time winner of Best Talk Presenter.

Hit Network’s Hamish and Andy (Hamish Blake and Andy Lee), who have been celebrating their last year in radio throughout 2017, won the Best Station Produced Comedy Segment and Best Station Promotion taking their ACRA career total to 11. Smallzy (Kent Small) host of Smallzy’s Surgery and celebrating 10 years with Nova Entertainment, was awarded the ACRA for Best Music or Entertainment Presenter for the second year running.

2GB sports presenter, Erin Molan won the Best Newcomer On-Air award and also picked up the Best On-Air Team (AM) as part of The Continuous Call Team (Ray Hadley, Bob Fulton, Darryl Brohman, Erin Molan, David Morrow, Mark Riddell, Chris Warren & Mark Levy). Erin’s the first female to join the 2GB Continuous Call Team full time in the show’s 31-year history.

Winners of other major awards were:

–  Best Networked Program – The Kyle & Jackie O Show; Kyle Sandilands & Jackie Henderson (ARN)

– Best Syndicated Program – Boxed In; Fifi Box (Fox FM Hit Network)

– Best Sports Presenter – Peter Stirling (Triple M Sydney)

Chief executive officer of Commercial Radio Australia, Joan Warner, said this year’s winners showed the wide appeal of radio, with talk, sport, music, comedy and news well represented. “The diversity of the winners across radio highlights the depth of talent throughout Australia,” Warner said Saturday night.

Entries were received from 260 metropolitan and regional radio stations across Australia. Stations outside the metropolitan areas are well represented at the ACRAs with more than 200 finalists from country and provincial stations. Organised by Commercial Radio Australia, the national Awards cover 33 categories. Winners are announced in each category across three areas: metropolitan, provincial and country commercial radio stations, and encompass all areas of commercial radio broadcasting including news, talk, sport, music and entertainment. The ACRAs differ from television’s Logie Awards in that they are peer judged by industry members.
